Has widespread use of credit cards contributed to the increase in personal bankruptcy? : An article from: Regional Review – Federal Reserve Bank of Boston
Credit card delinquencies and personal bankruptcy rates increased during the mid 1990s, despite the strength of the US economy. At a time when per capita income was rising, household borrowing grew at an even faster pace. Some blame credit card default rates on lenders, arguing that lenient standards have allowed customers to borrow larger than they can repay; Others blame borrowers for spending beyond their means.

Various ways to accept credit card payments September 27th, 2006

Abstract: internet credit card processings
Tag:

According to sbinformation.about.com, merchant services enables
to process credit card payments from your customers. It’s a
special account tied to a credit card processor that works with
your customer’s bank to help route payments into the bank
account. All small businesses require some form of payment
processing. Understanding how to select merchant services can
impact your sales revenue and profit. One method is to outsource
merchant services to a third party. The third party collects
your customers data and does all the work to process payments
for your small business. Another way to collect credit card
payments on the web is called deferred payment processing. The
customer inputs all data and you receive the data manually. With
deferred processing, the data does not go through the gateway.
One advantage to deferred processing is the ability to inspect
all orders and correct them. Deferred payment processing can be
time-consuming especially if you have hundreds of orders per
day. Finding the nonpareil merchant service option can be
overwhelming. Review your options and make the decision based on
what your customers would prefer and your Small business can
afford.

As per webmasterstop.com,an internet merchant account will have
three types of costs

1. Up Front Application Fees 2. On Going Fixed Fee 3. Discount
Rate 4. Fixed Transaction Fee 5. Termination Fees 6.
Miscellaneous Fees

Up Front Application Fees: Many internet merchant accounts will
require an up front application fee. This fee, supposedly, is to
cover their costs for processing your application. In case you
choose not to open an internet merchant account, they still
cover their initial costs.

On Going Fixed Fee: Most all internet merchant services provider
require a monthly fixed fee or “statement fee” as it is commonly
named, which is simply another way to cover their costs and make
money. You will be hard pressed to find a provider that does not
require this type of fee on a monthly basis.

Discount Rate: Usually, the discount rate will be between 2 and
4 percent. The discount rate is the sales commission the
provider earns on each sale. For example, if the discount rate
offered is 3%, and you receive a sale over your web site for
$20, you will owe 60 cents to your internet merchant provider.

Fixed Transaction Fee: Usually between $0.20 and $0.30, the
fixed transaction fee is the fixed fee portion of each sale.
Unlike the discount rate, the fixed transaction fee is the same
for every transaction.

ACH or Credit Cards September 25th, 2006

Abstract: high risk offshore merchant account
Tag:

Most businesses accept credit cards and consider the process
fees a cost of doing business. However by implementing an ACH
payment system you can realize dramatic savings and increase
sales.

ACH refers to the Automated Clearing House and generically means
moving money electronically to and from checking and savings
accounts. An example would be a check by phone or taking
recurring payments directly from a checking account.

The MAJOR difference between ACH and credit card processing is
that a credit card transaction “captures” the merchant’s funds
from the consumer and essentially guarantees payment. An ACH
transaction is a request to transfer funds. The transaction may
reject for several reasons with the most common being NSF (non
sufficient funds) or a closed account. The funds are not
guaranteed.

It is the guarantee piece that allows the credit card company to
charge a percentage of the transaction to cover the risks
involved. Typically a transaction will consist of a discount
rate, 2.5% for example and a transaction fee, typically in the
30 cent range. This means that every $100 processed incurs about
$2.85 in merchant fees.

Contrast this with an ACH transaction. Typically there is no
discount rate just a .30 (or less) transaction fee. If you
process $25,000 per month using ACH processing will save around
$7500 per year. Certainly you will have fresh “failed” sales due
to ACH transaction rejects (eg NSF) but your transaction savings
will far exceed these losses. In addition you will appeal to a
much wider range of consumers. Estimates vary but MANY people do
not have credit cards or are at their limit on their cards. So
the benefits are two fold-much reduced transaction fees and a
new payment vehicle for your customers.

So consider ACH processing for your business. It will save you
money and win new customers.

Gift Cards : An article from: Credit Union Management September 21st, 2006

Abstract: internet ecommerce merchant account

Gift Cards : An article from: Credit Union Management
In introducing gift cards as a member service, marketing and pricing strategies are crucial considerations in determining what volume of business a CU can expect. Actively promoting the advantages and variety of uses for gift cards can make them perennial favorites. Depending on how you price them, gift cards may also create a steady revenue stream or serve primarily as a valued member service and source of referrals. In addition to gift giving, the CU has come up with a niche marketing concept for the cards, offering them as an alternative to parents inquiring about opening a checking account with debit card access for their teenagers. Depending on the prices the CU establishes for its gift cards, they may or may not become significant money-makers. Disintermediation, or keeping members from going elsewhere for this service, is a key reason for offering gift cards. Timing is important when introducing gift cards to members.
