A Novel Credit Card Scam : An article from: The Internal Auditor
Jennifer, an assistant treasurer, receives an email from her former boss Larry, who no longer worked for the organization, requesting a refund that he had forgotten to turn in for reimbursement. Because something didn’t seem quite right, she chose to check on whether the company had already reimbursed Larry. She increased the scope of her search and found $88,000 in charges on Larry’s corporate credit card, none was for business expenses. The lesson applied is an important one to teach operations personnel: Take time to check anything that doesn’t seem right. If employees are presented with a transaction that they do not completely understand, they should do what it takes to understand the transaction. Also, segregated duties is a concept that is drilled into the brains of internal auditors ad nauseam, but it is not necessarily communicated as often to operational management.
