The determinants of default on credit card debt June 29th, 2010

The determinants of default on credit card debt
This study formulates a theory about why people default on their credit card debt. After an exhaustive review of the literature available on the subject of default, the most probable determinants of default were included in an empirical model and then modified into a more precise form. This analysis led to conclusive results and some insights regarding how to best develop public policy concerning default. This study uses the Buckeye State Poll (BSP) data collected by the Center for Survey Research at Ohio State University. The BSP data was collected for the state of Ohio using a random telephone survey conducted from November 1996 to April 2002. Since no complete empirical model of credit card debt default has been developed, it was necessary to create a new model using some previously identified determinants identified by a number of researchers. The final model was obtained by first splitting the BSP dataset in half using an Excel random number generator. Then, using one half of the original dataset, exploratory data analysis techniques, backwards regression, and various statistical tests were used to develop a formal model of credit card default. Using the negative binomial method of regression on the withheld portion of the original dataset, the final model developed earlier in the analysis was again tested. Upon comparing the results of the two regressions, it is clear that factors such as (a) having charged at least one credit card to the credit limit in the past six months and (b) having a low level of income increases Ohioans expected number of credit card debt defaults. In the conclusion it is stated that no formal public policy proposal has been developed regarding credit card default. Being that credit card default is currently an increasing trend in the United States, there will soon be a pressing need for policy that addresses this issue and combats the problem. In this section, suggestions are made regarding how best to use the results from this study to develop effective public policy concerning credit card debt default.
